Doll Care

Reborn Care Instructions

Hello and congratulations on your adoption! You have chosen a high-quality Reborn doll by master artist Julia Savelieva. Please note that it is not a play doll, but a precious collectible and needs to be handled accordingly. If cared for properly, your baby will bring you many years of everyday joy.  Following are the most important things to remember.

Handling and Storing

A good rule of thumb for handling a Reborn baby doll is that you should handle her the same way you would handle a real newborn baby. Before holding your baby, please make sure that your hands are clean, dry and free of lotion. Never hold your baby by her head, arms, or legs.

  • It is best to keep your Reborn at a temperature that would be comfortable for a real baby.  Avoid extreme heat and temperatures below 0ºC (32ºF).
  • Your Reborn doll should be kept away from any sources of extreme heat, such as ovens, burners, and hot air blowers.
  • Never leave your Reborn in the backseat of a car in either hot or cold weather. A car can heat up quickly and destroy the vinyl that your Reborn is made of.
  • Do not let your baby be in direct sunlight for longer than half an hour. Prolonged or frequent exposure to a bright sunlight will cause to fade away the colors of her skin, hair, and clothing.
  • Avoid extreme cold.  Babies stored in cold garages, basements or storage facilities may crack when they get too cold.
  • Keep the baby from contact with highly pigmented objects, such as bright colored fabrics, colored paper, newspaper, un-treated painted surfaces, markers, colored pencils, crayons, and so on. Vinyl is easily stained by strong dyes and inks. Also be careful handling the baby – nail polish on your hands, makeup on your face and dye in your hair can also stain vinyl.
  • Keep out of the reach of pets.
  • Do not let small children play with the doll unattended. Always supervise your Reborn when in the presence of small children. Rough playing could scratch the painting and potentially soil or tear the cloth body.
  • Do not use any cleaning solvents, spirits, or alcohol on your baby! Nor apply any lotion or oil on her skin and hair.
Never use sharp or pointed objects near you Reborn. They could scratch the paint or damage the vinyl.
Keep the baby away from excessive moisture, which can cause damage to her cloth body.

Posing

  • Care should be taken when posing your Reborn. Arms and legs can be gently posed but should never be forced. Extreme pressure on the seams of the body can cause tearing.
Baby’s head can gently be turned from side to side, but again, it should not be forced.
Your Reborn’s eyes are set in place with a waterproof glue. Please do not press on them or try to reposition them as this can cause them to become dislodged.

Hair Care

  • Your Reborn’s hair is hand rooted premium mohair to emulate very subtle baby hair. On the inside of the head, it has been sealed with a strong waterproof adhesive to keep the hair from coming out. Still, mohair has a tendency to bunch and mat, so it requires special care.
  • Avoid unnecessary styling of the hair – only comb very gently if it gets tangled. Rough styling can break it.
  • Just like a real baby, her hair gets a little messy from laying on it. The best way to fix this is to lightly wet and finger style the curls.
  • For better combing, use a leave-in conditioner with a detangling agent or a detangle spray on a damp hair.
  • If baby’s hair becomes dusty, lightly moisten it with conditioner and water and gently brush to remove the dust.
  • When washing is absolutely necessary, you can gently wash her hair, but never immerse the baby’s head in the water. Wet the hair with WARM water (mohair felts in cold water). Use a very small amount of baby shampoo, but do not scrub or massage – this tangles the hair. Instead, gently brush the shampoo through the hair until it lathers. Rinse the brush and hair in warm water until all the shampoo is gone.
  • Never use colored shampoos – it will result in stains on the skin of your doll.
  • Make sure not to wet the textile body.
  • Blot dry (do not rub) hair with a soft towel. Allow to air dry – never blow-dry reborn’s hair.
  • Avoid trimming, thinning, or cutting Reborn’s hair – it will not grow back unlike on a real baby.

Dressing

  • You can change her clothes as often as you want as long as you are careful.
  • Never force your Reborn’s limbs into clothing or hold your Reborn by his/her limbs.  Doing these things can result in Reborn injuries.
  • Always wash new colored closing before dressing your baby. The dyes in cloth can stain your Reborn’s vinyl.
  • Your baby can wear size some Newborn and 0-3 month clothing. However, purchased clothing may not fit a reborn doll exactly, because they are made for human babies, and in most cases, the necklines are too large.

Cleaning The Body

  • This doll features from soft vinyl head and limbs, and a doe suede body.
  • If any dirt or residue gets on the vinyl parts, these can be wiped away with a damp washcloth. A very small amount of baby wash or mild soap will help lather away stubborn stains. Towel blot to dry.
  • Avoid scrubbing as this may damage the painting.
  • Do not wet or submerge in water the cloth body.
  • If the cloth body gets dirty, use a damp cloth to wipe away stains. Try not to wet the stuffing.  Allow drying completely.
  • If the body got extremely dirty, ask an experienced Reborn Artist to help you clean it up or to replace it.

Mind the Magnets

This doll has strong neodymium magnets inside her head right behind the lips for attaching pacifiers, as well as in the pacifier that comes with her. These magnets are capable of damaging electronic equipment and data storage media.

  • The magnets are not safe around individuals with hearing aids, pacemakers, and other implanted or wearable assistive electronic devices.
  • Keep magnets at least 2 feet away from anyone with a such a device or from other sensitive electronic devices to avoid interference.
  • Never bring magnets close to your plastic card, or any other media that uses a magnetic technology for recording information, such as external hard drives.
  • Keep the magnets away from children and pets – the magnets are small and are very dangerous if swallowed.
  • You can remove the magnets if you choose to. If you need a help with it, contact me or another experienced Reborn Artist.
  • As an alternative to magnets, you can use putty for holding a pacifier in place.

Stuffing Materials

Your Reborn’s torso, head, and limbs are filled in with a quality synthetic fiber and carefully weighted with poly pellets and glass beads. The beads may pour out if the body is torn. If it happens, don’t let children or pets to swallow them – carefully brush them out to a dustpan.
